PJ Harvey | The Words That Maketh Murder
I’ve heard that ‘the words that maketh murder’ refers to the act of bringing the atrocities committed in war to light. War tribunals investigate ‘war crimes’, judges and calls them murder, whilst before this point they are just things that happen on the battlefield. Let England Shake is effectively an anti-war album, but works as a great piece of music, even if you don’t read into what each line of her powerful songwriting means. Harvey’s vocals in lines such as ‘What if I take my problems to the United Nations?’ alone carry enough weight and emotion to make this easily one of the best albums of 2011.
