Jonathan Fire*Eater - When The Curtain Calls For You
It’s quite bizarre to think that back in ‘97 record companies were tripping over each other trying to land these guys for their debut on a major label to flop financially. It’s just not a mainstream sound (If these guys were around now they’d find a fanbase much more easily), and they remain an underrated and forgotten relic of the New York Indie Rock scene that gave us the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and LCD Soundsystem. I only heard of them because their keyboardist, drummer and guitarist went on to be part of the Walkmen. So in a lot of ways you can hear a raw version of the sounds that became songs like Little House of Savages come through. First track on the album and the best, it has decent build-up before Barrick’s drumming and Martin’s keyboard drives it to a ferocious pace.
