Sufjan Stevens - Decatur, or, Round of Applause for Your Stepmother!
Like most of the songs on this album it’s full of references to real people and events from a region of Illinois, and though as I’m not an Illinoisan so I can’t be sure of its validity, It builds a intricate description and atmosphere for the state. But the reason I love this song is how he manages to make all these ideas mesh and keep a rhyme scheme that fits the song so well. The use of background vocals and that central melody sounds fantastic throughout; and I feel that similarly to many other Sufjan songs there’s a celebratory feel to it, but with a hint of melancholy. He’s one of the only artists I know that make me feel happy and sad at the same time.
