The Walkmen - We’ve Been Had
Most people will know this from the Saturn Ion commercial from a little while back, but to me this is just one of the Walkmen’s best songs. As far as I can tell all Walkmen songs are either woeful (If Only It Were True), bitter (My Old Man), or angry (The Rat), and I think there’s a little bit of a mockery of the new indie rock bands that were just becoming popular at the time (e.g. the Strokes, the Hives) with their ‘retro image’ and ‘dumb haircuts from 1960’. But the main idea I believe is that we are brought up thinking we plan out our lives, and end up looking back and realising we’ve become just what society wanted us to be - we’ve been had.
